Last week First Lady Michelle Obama spoke about childhood obesity before an audience
at Health and Human Services. She posed this question to the group; "What does it mean that
medical experts are warning that for the first time that the next
generation is on track to having a shorter lifespan than this
generation?" She responded to her own question with the remark, "None of us want a future like that for our children."
The First Lady went on to share her personal struggle to put a healthy meal on the table while balancing her busy schedule before entering the White House. She also acknowledged that many Americans struggle like she did to prepare a healthy dinner and to be a good example to their children. She addressed many of the obstacles to healthy lifestyles, and she also gave several small, realistic steps that could be taken to make a difference in the lives of the next generation. She encouraged adding fruits and vegetables to
meals. She urged a reduction of sugary drinks by switching soft drinks with water. She suggested standing instead of sitting while watching television. Mrs. Obama charged her audience to make healthy eating and activity choices. "The best way to change your children's lives
is to see them watching you change yours."
