For patients that find out that bariatric surgery is excluded from their policy, we have a couple suggestions...
The first step you can do is try to educate your employer. This can be done by giving your employer articles or information showing how bariatric surgery saves employers money in the long term. Especially smaller companies will sometimes make an exception and cover one employee based on their health and their cost to the company. This employee's insurance coverage costs should be much less after bariatric surgery.
If those efforts are unsuccessful in obtaining coverage, then it is time to find a way to finance the operation. You can go to your bank to finance the loan at your own institution. Or there are companies that specialize in financing health care loans.
The bottom line is that most patients will tell you that it is the best money they ever spent. Yes, there is an upfront expense, but the investment is in their life. And the return on investment is not only better health, but the beginning of a new life.
