Unfortunately many insurance plans do not cover weight loss surgery. And even if your plan does cover the procedure you may need additional documentation to prove that you need it.

So if you are serious about bariatric surgery, here are some tips on getting a head start on the insurance approval process.

1. Contact Dr. Syn's office. He has employees who specialize in insurance verification and can assist you in the process. This is a complex process; please enlist the help of our professionals.

2. Contact your insurance company. Read your certificate of coverage and call your insurance customer service line. It is important that you know what your plan will and will not cover.

3. Get proof of unsuccessful weight loss attempts. Contact your primary care physician or other physicians and ask for any documentation they may have of your struggle with obesity and its comorbidities. Also, make sure you ask your physicians to document any weight loss measures they utilize with you. Collect other proof, too. This could include receipts or other documents (from gym memberships, counseling sessions, weight loss program memberships, weight loss medications, etc.).

4. Make a list of your previous weight loss attempts. A self report of previous weight loss attempts may be enough proof. So, start from the beginning and write out all the different methods you've tried. Give the list to your bariatric surgeon. It will probably serve as great motivation for you to follow through with the surgery. After all, weight loss surgery is the only weight loss method where dramatic results are typical.

5.  Investigate your appeal process. If you are denied by your insurance company you may want to consider an appeal. There are insurance attornies and insurance advocates available to assist you, often for a fee. There may be a time limit to when you must file an appeal or a maximum number of times you may appeal.

Some policies have very solid exclusions. If your policy has a definite exclusion there is likely nothing we can do to get the procedure covered.

Please call (806)687-5670 to speak with one of our insurance experts if you are interested in weight loss surgery by Dr. Syn.

How much is the cost if my insurance does not cover. Is there a way to convience
my insurance to pay if I have tryed all types of diets. Pills for weight loss
several times also.
JMaples, RN  - Response to Juanita   |2008-10-24 12:30:23
We do have a self pay option. The price depends on if you have the procedure as
an in-patient or an out-patient. Dr. Syn has certain criteria you must meet for
him to feel comfortable doing the procedure on an out-patient basis.
As far as
convincing your insurance company to pay we would need to know more information.
The best thing to do is call Dr. Syn's office (806)687-5670 to speak with an
insurance expert who can assist you with the process.
Some of the questions
they may ask you are:
1. Is there an exclusion? If
yes, how is the exclusion
worded?
2. Is your employer self-insured?
3. Who is your insurance company?

I have Humana Gold insurance. And I am a candidate for this procedure. I have
been to a seminar and have been waiting since Sept 2008 to have this done. I am
tired of waiting and I want to get on with this. I don't know if you may be able
to help me or not. I would really like to know, because I would like to come to
Lubbock instead of El Paso. Anyway anything you may be able to do tell me or
help me with I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

Jessica,
I have been considering bariatric surgery for a while now. I just
finished watching your videos on healthnet for the CEUs, and would like to get
more information on Dr. Syn if possible. I know a couple people here at the
hospital that I work at have had bariatric surgery, but they went down to
Wichita Falls and I'm not sure why when Lubbock is closer. Can you help?

IS THERE A CENTER OF EXCELLENCE HERE IN LUBBOCK, TX.?

Ladies,
I appreciate your interest in our services.
Currently there is not a
Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence in Lubbock, TX. However, my facility,
Covenant Health System, is the only facility in the area working towards the
accreditation.
Anyone who would like more information about our partnership
with Dr. David Syn should request a DVD on this website or contact me via email
with your mailing address, and I will get a DVD in the mail to you ASAP!
My
email address is:
jcmaples@covhs.org
Blessings to all of you!

I also wanted to address issues with insurance approvals and the waiting,
waiting, waiting...
My biggest frustration with this wonderful specialty is
that many insurances do not cover the procedure, making it difficult for
candidates who are ready and willing to make changes to actually have the
surgery done.
If your insurance denies you, you may appeal. If appeals remain
denied, there is the option to self-pay for some patients. Dr. Syn only does
self-pay surgeries on the lowest risk candidates. If you are unable to pay all
the cost in one lump sum, financing options are available through companies such
as Care Credit.
